The Natural History Collections comprise of the botany, geology and zoology sections in addition to the Museum Garden and also The Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Milde. The main activities are within research, collection, preservation and mediation.
The museum building on Nygårdshøyden contains the research subjects botanical, geological and zoology, research specimen collections, laboratories and exhibitions. The research and administrative staff are partly located here, and partly at Realfagbygget i Allègaten.
The scientific collections are varied and consist of different osteological, entomological, vertebrate, and invertebrate collections within zoology, paleobotanical collections and herbariums within botany and different geological collections. The collections consist of specimens gathered from research projects, natural resource managment projects, archaeological research- and management projects and private gifts a.o. A large part of the zoological exhibitions on display are preserved in their original form the way they were put up one hundred years ago - with mammals, birds and fishes from all over the world - an adventurous visit to a time long gone. The geological exhibitions are modern and shows a large number of themes from the geological field of research. Particularly interesting are the mineral collection were both exquisite samples from all over the world and also nice local samples are exhibited.
The Museum Garden is at its nicest in spring and summer, while you can enjoy tropical plants all year around in the Green House. |
