The Vertebrate Section holds scientific collections of vertebrates, comprising c. 21.000 specimens of altogether 3174 species. Osteological specimens are kept in a separate Section of Osteology.
The oldest material dates back to about 1850, the bulk, however, originating from the twentieth century. The specimens are generally available for loan to scientific institutions for research purposes. Researchers not affiliated with a research institution wanting to borrow material must make appointment with a relevant institution to take responsibility for the loan. Large specimens (of several kg) are normally not sent on loan. However, the Vertebrate Section can offer a modest lab. space for visitors. No bench fee is requested. Information adhering to the specimens is available for researchers, as are data from Document Files (such as Nest Cards and Faunistic Files).
